Trauma Related Conditions

Understanding Trauma and Its Impact

Trauma is an emotional and physiological response to deeply distressing or disturbing experiences. While some people recover naturally, others develop lasting symptoms that interfere with daily life, relationships, and overall well-being. Trauma-related conditions are not signs of weakness—they are the body and mind’s attempt to cope with overwhelming stress.

At Illuminate Wellness, we provide a safe, supportive space to help you process your experiences, reduce distressing symptoms, and regain a sense of safety and control.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

PTSD can develop after exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence. Symptoms may include:

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares
  • Avoidance of reminders of the trauma
  • Persistent feelings of fear, guilt, or shame
  • Hypervigilance or being easily startled

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD)

C-PTSD often results from long-term or repeated trauma, such as ongoing abuse, neglect, or captivity. In addition to PTSD symptoms, it may include:

  • Difficulty regulating emotions
  • Negative self-image
  • Chronic feelings of emptiness
  • Trouble trusting others or maintaining relationships

Acute Stress Disorder (ASD)

ASD involves PTSD-like symptoms that occur within the first month after a traumatic event. Early intervention can sometimes prevent it from developing into PTSD.

Adjustment Disorders Related to Trauma

When a stressful or traumatic event triggers significant emotional or behavioral symptoms that disrupt daily life—but don’t meet full PTSD criteria—this is considered an adjustment disorder.

Common Causes of Trauma

Trauma can result from a wide range of experiences, including:

  • Physical, sexual, or emotional abuse
  • Neglect or abandonment
  • Domestic violence
  • Serious accidents or injuries
  • Natural disasters
  • Military combat or exposure to war
  • Sudden loss of a loved one
  • Medical trauma, such as life-threatening illness or invasive procedures

Signs and Symptoms

While trauma responses vary widely, some common signs include:

  • Intrusive, distressing thoughts or memories
  • Avoidance of people, places, or situations related to the trauma
  • Feeling emotionally numb or detached
  • Changes in mood, such as irritability, anger, or sadness
  • Sleep disturbances, including insomnia or nightmares
  • Heightened startle response or constant “on edge” feeling
  • Difficulty concentrating

How We Help

Illuminate Wellness offers trauma-informed care, meaning every aspect of treatment is designed to avoid re-traumatization and promote safety and empowerment. Our therapists may use:

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) – to process and integrate traumatic memories
  • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) – to address unhelpful thought patterns and build coping skills
  • Somatic Therapy Approaches – to help release trauma stored in the body
  • Mindfulness and Stress Reduction Techniques – to increase present-moment awareness and calm the nervous system
  • Psychoeducation – to help clients understand how trauma affects the brain and body

Why Early Support Matters

Without treatment, trauma-related symptoms can worsen over time, sometimes leading to depression, anxiety, substance use, or relationship problems. Early intervention offers the best chance for recovery and can prevent symptoms from becoming chronic.

  • Among veterans, PTSD rates are particularly high. 11% to 23% experience PTSD within any given year.
  • First responders like paramedics, firefighters, and police are deeply affected: roughly 30% experience PTSD.
  • Sexual violence dramatically increases PTSD risk: up to 49% of survivors develop PTSD, and 94% of rape victims report symptoms within two weeks of the assault.
